Hashtag Troubleshooting
Hashtag strategy can be tricky.
And one of the most common questions I hear as a social media manager is:
Why aren't my hashtags doing anything?
You're not alone in asking that. Hashtags are one of those things that seem easy but take a little strategy. They’re always changing, and it’s easy to feel like you're doing something wrong.
The good news? A few simple tweaks can make a big difference.
Let’s walk through a few questions I like to ask when troubleshooting hashtags.
Are you using niche hashtags that make sense for your business?
Using hashtags that are too broad (like #shoplocal or #entrepreneur) can bury your post. Instead, use specific hashtags your ideal customer might search.
Are you using a branded hashtag?
This is one of the easiest ways to build recognition and track your content. You can use your business name, or create a hashtag specific to a collection, campaign, or service you’re known for.
Are you using enough hashtags?
Instagram lets you use up to 30 hashtags per post. Use them! I often recommend using all or close to all of them to boost reach. Think of it like casting a wider net.
Are you using the same hashtags every time?
Mix it up. If you’re always using the same group of hashtags, Instagram might not show your content as widely. Refresh your list regularly and rotate between sets.
Are you tracking hashtag performance?
Check your post insights. See which hashtags are helping you reach new people, or which ones bring in engagement. That’s the best way to know what’s actually working.
These are the same questions I use when working with clients. Hashtags can be powerful when used the right way and a small shift in strategy can lead to more reach, engagement, and growth.
